Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Friday, February 20, 2009

This has got to be the most common question asked by anyone considering acupuncture therapy.  “does it hurt?”

The standard answer is no... and with some forms of acupuncture there is little or no perceptible sensation.  What sensation is felt by the patient depends on which structures are being treated and stimulated by the needles.

When one thinks of acupuncture the sensation is often imagined as sharp or a pin-prick.  This is actually a rare sensation in reality because of how small the needles are.

For instance, if the purpose of treatment is shoulder pain and our target tissue is the muscles of the rotator cuff, there is a distinct sensation associated with this type of acupuncture.

Typically there is a dull, pressure felt deep in the shoulder that feels like a heavy massage or manual pressure to that muscle.  Often times patients report that they feel a “good pain” or will state that “that’s it, that’s the spot that hurts” when the pin is positioned correctly.

Many patients actually report feeling relief as the pins do their work in the tissue.  “it’s exactly where I try to push when it hurts but I can never quite get to it”

The pins can reach structures much more precisely than other forms of manual or non-surgical intervention.  This is why Symmergy acupuncture is so effective in treating joint pain.

My answer to the, “does it hurt” question is...
“you feel some sensation with acupuncture treatment but it is rarely sharp or painful.  The anticipation of having acupuncture is much worse than the actual treatment.”

You’ll be surprised at how easy and effective Symmergy acupuncture is.

Testimonials

- Tim H.

"Having received treatment elsewhere, Symmergy has far exceeded my expectations.  Over several months my pain management situation had proven challenging... numerous visits to my family doctor, prescription medications, MRI, physical therapy, specialists, etc... all resulting in no measurable relief.  Shortly after beginning treatment with Dr. Golden however, I've noticed a remarkable difference!  To add to that my visits to Symmergy are always a positive experience."
