Patients... Heal Thine Self
Friday, March 6, 2009
The fact is when a patient comes through my door I can only help them so far... then it’s up to you, the patient, to take your structure (physical body) and use it so that it doesn’t “de-condition”
Let me explain. our bodies are, for the most part, well oiled machines. They are designed to move and be used for physical activity. When the body sits dormant and unused it will fall into disrepair, much like a house or a vehicle would.
At Symmergy we take and find the asymmetries, or imbalances that cause pain and degeneration, and correct them using various non-surgical techniques. Once the structure is balanced enough to function normally, only you the patient can finish “tuning up” the machine!
By using the body for controlled and symmetric activity you can strengthen the muscles in a balanced environment. The balance of muscle strength is the key to long-term benefit and pain-free movement.
So what is a “controlled and balanced activity” there doc?... glad you asked:)
There are many great activities (exercises) that qualify. I personally use strength training and a bit of running/eliptical and swimming to do the job. Yoga, Pilates, various controlled group aerobic classes can be great.
The basic components are controlled, comfortable, symmetric movements and lifts. If you take the most gentle and perfect stretch and only do that activity to one side of you body it will still harm you. So again, BALANCE IS KEY!
If you do a push motion for 30 seconds, you should follow that up with a pull motion for 30 seconds... does that make sense? There is a bit more to this if your body isn’t in a relative state of balance already.
In general, if you notice tightness, restriction, clicking or popping, and particularly if you notice pain during an activity... something is not balanced and you need to change the activity or change your symmetry.
I will be following up on this basic concept over the next hand-full of months. Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me if you should ever have any questions, always happy to share what I know:)
God Bless & Good Health,
