With the unfortunate statistics attached to the ever-increasing population of knee pain sufferers, alternative medicine options and non-surgical pain management is the best first-line intervention available. Treatments like acupuncture is one of best options available for knee pain and is approved by the FDA as a treatment option with good clinical outcomes.
The way the Symmergy Clinic utilizes acupuncture to treat knee pain is simple. There are two primary means by which Symmergy acupuncture elicits pain relief in the knee:
1) local pain blocking at the site of knee pain
2) muscle lengthening focused at the tissues that move the knee and cause pressure in the knee
Both means of pain reduction are administered at the same time and electro-stimulation (e-stim) is also commonly applied through the needles.
The “charge” that the needles have, along with the e-stim charge, influence different parts of the central nervous system. One “tricks” part of the brain to ignore pain from the region of treatment. The other “tricks” the part of the brain that controls muscle length (muscle memory).
Acupuncture treatment for knee pain usually has very quick results (1-4 visits) and can last for a significant time. How permanent the pain relief is depends on if there is any structural damage (arthritis or tissue tears) and also what activities you chose to engage in that affect that regions of your body.
